"Five" (Hourglass)

Written by Sir. Aristus

Verse I

The hourglass narrates the story; gravity records the record; a flick of the wrist starts the flow of time; one hundred grains of sand pass through the hour’s neck. Seconds turn minutes; minutes turn hours. The hour’s tick has no tock, only tales, rhyming with rhythm, sounds singing in sequence, striking with tempo; tell me, can you decipher the innuendo?

Verse II

The glass reflections illuminate the light, shining brighter than sunlight. The glare is clear, a finer sight, like a paradise; travel there, you’ll notice the sight. The tone is fading, with only a few quotes remaining; the hour’s end is nigh, shifting time; just look up towards the sky. Faint is the sound of silence, windy with whispers; words become silent. The hourglass has the hour. All I need is “Five” – For the cycle to be final.

Deciphered

Five” was written to illuminate the importance of time; the hourglass symbolizes the cycle of minutes, moments, and memories. The poem is an enigma, carrying many meanings and leaving the audience free to decipher. In the poem’s first verse, I asked, “Tell me, can you decipher the innuendo?” The question can be answered or perceived in many ways. However, the answer is "imagination."

As a reader of this poem, I encourage you to re-listen with your eyes shut with undivided attention. See if you can place yourself inside the hourglass, sand filling around you, with someone holding the hourglass ready to turn time upside down over you. Putting yourself in this dilemma will help you identify how your vulnerable state defines time.

Attention

Significantly, our minds have been overloaded by the information we encounter daily. Our hands swipe, and our eyes experience a dopamine flash, disturbing our senses. In today’s society, adults’ attention spans are, on average, 8.25 seconds; this is 21.36 seconds shorter than children’s attention spans. This statistic should concern everyone who is an adult or a parent, as we lack the concentration to become visionaries.

Poetic expressions like this will challenge listeners to focus their attention and sharpen their senses, enabling them to relate and understand vulnerabilities. “Five” also refers to the time required for my content to create influence. In verse two, I mentioned,

“All I need is five.”

This quote references five minutes for audience attention—every poem, whether a theatrical drama or vivid story, will be no longer than five minutes long; this integrity of time between the listener and the creator will honor a connection, executing on the goal to touch the soul’s vulnerabilities by pulling the desirable and undesirable emotions to the surface.
